What are BerkShares?

BerkShares are a local currency for the Berkshire (MA) region. Dubbed a “great economic experiment” by the New York Times, BerkShares are a tool for community empowerment, enabling merchants and consumers to plant the seeds for an alternative economic future for their communities. Launched in the fall of 2006, BerkShares had a robust initiation, with over one million BerkShares having been circulated in the first nine months and over two million to date. Currently, more than three hundred and sixty businesses have signed up to accept the currency. Five different banks have partnered with BerkShares, with a total of thirteen branch offices now serving as exchange stations. For BerkShares, this is only the beginning. Future plans could involve BerkShare checking accounts, electronic transfer of funds, ATM machines, and even a loan program to facilitate the creation of new, local businesses manufacturing more of the goods that are used locally.

A while ago I was bored and recorded this little tune for Berkshares.

As I drove home from New Jersey, I flipped through the channels looking for something to listen to. I switched the channels back and forth, and I couldn’t find anything worth listening to. Same old on the radio: pop hits, christian babel channels, talk radio and classic rock. So, I punched good ol’ number 1 on my channel preset. The radio station I love and really the only one I listen to, 88.5 WXPN. However, it was static and I left it be. I was just outside of the transmission range, I suppose. Though, I usually pick it up right around Princeton, NJ. As I drove, the static began to change and you could hear snippets of songs coming through. I drove and listened to the static, somewhat in the background. Along the way, the static lessened and eventually became what I was after. I could hear more structure, I could hear the songs. There was I Feel Fine by the Beatles and A Pete Yorn tune. I was finally in range of my favorite radio station.

Next time you’re out of town, try it on the way home. It’s kind of a performance piece played out by your car.

Live blogging the garden…and using this shitty picture feature. Seriously, it sucks so hard. OK, maybe its not THAT bad, but something erks me about it and I’m not sure what it is.

Anyways, I’ve got some pumpkins, watermelons, poppies, sunflowers and maybe I’ll live blog some more veggies later. Perhaps some swiss chard, tomato, and corn? It’s beautiful today.
